   whiting, the name of various fishes, fr. gwyn white.]

   A fish ({Coregonus ferus}) of North Wales and Northern
   Europe, allied to the lake whitefish; -- called also {powan},
   and {schelly}. [Written also {gwyniad}, {guiniad},
   {gurniad}.]
