   Any one of several species of birds of the genus {Sitta}, as
   the European species ({Sitta Europaea}). The {white-breasted
   nuthatch} ({Sitta Carolinensis}), the {red-breasted nuthatch}
   ({Sitta Canadensis}), the {pygmy nuthatch} ({Sitta pygmaea}),
   and others, are American.
