Surly \Sur"ly\ (s[^u]r"l[y^]), a. [Compar. {Surlier}
   (s[^u]r"l[i^]*[~e]r); superl. {Surliest}.] [Probably from
   sir, and originally meaning, sirlike, i.e., proud. See {Sir},
   and {Like}, a.]
