   (Bot.)
   A North American tree ({Nyssa multiflora}) with very tough
   wood, handsome oval polished leaves, and very acid berries,
   -- the sour gum, or common tupelo. See {Tupelo}. [Written
   also {piperidge} and {pipperidge}.]
