   fr. Gr. "amamhli`s a kind of medlar or service tree; "a`ma at
   the same time + mh^lon an apple, any tree fruit.] (Bot.)
   A genus of plants which includes the witch-hazel ({Hamamelis
   Virginica}), a preparation of which is used medicinally.
