Tangle \Tan"gle\, n.
   1. [Cf. Icel. [thorn]["o]ngull. See {Tang} seaweed.] (Bot.)
      Any large blackish seaweed, especially the {Laminaria
      saccharina}. See {Kelp}.

      which are attached swabs, or bundles of frayed rope, or
      other similar substances, -- used to capture starfishes,
