   A bitter American herb of the Bloodwort family, with the
   leaves all radical, and the small yellow or white flowers in
   a long spike ({Aletris farinosa} and {Aletris aurea}). Called
   sometimes {star grass}, {blackroot}, {blazing star}, and
   {unicorn root}.
