   {Tawing}.] [OE. tawen, tewen, AS. t[=a]wian to prepare; cf.
   D. touwen, Goth. t[=e]wa order, taujan to do, and E. tool.

   1. To prepare or dress, as hemp, by beating; to tew; hence,
