Pencil \Pen"cil\, n. [OF. pincel, F. pinceau, L. penicillum,
   penicillus, equiv. to peniculus, dim. of penis a tail. Cf.

   1. A small, fine brush of hair or bristles used by painters
      for laying on colors.
