Sardis
    n 1: an ancient Greek city located in the western part of what
         is now modern Turkey; as the capital of Lydia it was the
         cultural center of Asia Minor; destroyed by Tamerlane in
         1402

Sardis
the metropolis of Lydia in Asia Minor. It stood on the river
Pactolus, at the foot of mount Tmolus. Here was one of the seven
Asiatic churches (Rev. 3:1-6). It is now a ruin called
Sert-Kalessi.
