Promethea \Pro*me"the*a\, n. [NL. See {Prometheus}.] (Zool.)
   A large American bombycid moth ({Callosamia promethea}). Its
   larva feeds on the sassafras, wild cherry, and other trees,
   and suspends its cocoon from a branch by a silken band.
