Polypteroidei \Po*lyp`te*roi"de*i\, n. pl. [NL. See
   {Polypterus}, and {-oid}.] (Zool.)
   A suborder of existing ganoid fishes having numerous fins
   along the back. The bichir, or Polypterus, is the type. See
   Illust. under {Crossopterygian}.
