phlox \phlox\ (fl[o^]ks), n. [L., a kind of flower, fr. Gr.
   flo`x flame, fr. fle`gein to burn.] (Bot.)
   A genus of American herbs, having showy red, white, or purple
   flowers.

      ({Heliothis phloxiphaga}). It is destructive to phloxes.
