mutual exclusion

   <parallel, operating system> (Or "mutex", plural: "mutexes") A
   collection of techniques for sharing resources so that
   different uses do not conflict and cause unwanted
   interactions.  One of the most commonly used techniques for
   mutual exclusion is the {semaphore}.
