   (Zool.)
   (a) A species of very large rat ({Mus giganteus}), found in
       India and Ceylon. It does much injury to rice fields and
       gardens.
   (b) A ratlike marsupial animal (genus {Perameles}) of several
       species, found in Australia and Tasmania.
