Hellbender \Hell"bend`er\, n. (Zool.)
   A large North American aquatic salamander ({Protonopsis
   horrida} or {Menopoma Alleghaniensis}). It is very voracious
   and very tenacious of life. Also called {alligator}, and
   {water dog}.
