   1. (Med.) The root of {Spigelia Marilandica}, used as a
      powerful vermifuge; also, that of {Spigelia Anthelmia}.

      (a) A perennial North American herb ({Spigelia
          Marilandica}), sometimes cultivated for its showy red
          blossoms. Called also {Carolina pink}, {Maryland

          ({Spigelia Anthelmia}).
