Lophine \Loph"ine\, n. [Gr. ? a tuft or crest of feathers.]
   (Chem.)
   A nitrogenous organic base obtained by the oxidation of
   amarine, and regarded as a derivative of benzoic aldehyde. It
   is obtained in long white crystalline tufts, -- whence its
   name.
