Hypoptilum \Hy*pop"ti*lum\, n.; pl. L. {Hypoptila}, E.
   {Hypoptilums}. [NL., fr. Gr. "ypo` beneath + ? down.] (Zool.)
   An accessory plume arising from the posterior side of the
   stem of the contour feathers of many birds; -- called also
   {aftershaft}. See Illust. of {Feather}.
