Hypocist \Hyp"o*cist\, n. [Gr. ? a plant growing on the roots of
   the Cistus.]
   An astringent inspissated juice obtained from the fruit of a
   plant ({Cytinus hypocistis}), growing from the roots of the
   {Cistus}, a small European shrub.
