Barret \Bar"ret\, n. [F. barrette, LL. barretum a cap. See
   {Berretta}, and cf. {Biretta}.]
   A kind of cap formerly worn by soldiers; -- called also
   {barret cap}. Also, the flat cap worn by Roman Catholic
   ecclesiastics.
