Whimbrel \Whim"brel\, n. [Cf. {Whimper}.] (Zool.)
   Any one of several species of small curlews, especially the
   European species ({Numenius phaeopus}), called also {Jack
   curlew}, {half curlew}, {stone curlew}, and {tang whaup}. See
