Hesperornis

Hesperornis \Hes`pe*ror"nis\, n. [NL., fr. Gr. ? western + ?, ?,
   a bird.] (Paleon.)
   A genus of large, extinct, wingless birds from the Cretaceous
   deposits of Kansas, belonging to the Odontornithes. They had
   teeth, and were essentially carnivorous swimming ostriches.
