   [Sp., a carpenter, a woodpecker.]
   A california woodpecker ({Melanerpes formicivorus)}, noted
   for its habit of inserting acorns in holes which it drills in
   trees. The acorns become infested by insect larv[ae], which,
   when grown, are extracted for food by the bird.
