   1. (Bot.) An herbaceous cruciferous plant ({Isatis
      tinctoria}) of the family {Cruciferae} (syn.
      {Brassicaceae}). It was formerly cultivated for the blue
      coloring matter derived from its leaves. See {isatin}.
